Phase 1 Membrane Project, Day 5 (September 3, 2025)

Phase 1 Membrane Replacement Project

Project Mobilization Date: August 11, 2025
Work Start Date: August 28, 2025
Expected duration: 2–3 months
Primary contractor: Prostar https://prostar.ca/

Weather: Sunny/smoky 29ºC

The only activity onsite today was delivery of a large waste bin later in the afternoon.

The driver was unsure where to put the bin and was unable to get hold of anyone who could tell him. The council VP happened to be passing by and advised him to put it in the four spaces that had been requested and reserved by Prostar adjacent to the 244 building, as shown below1.

  1. This information was obtained from the Council Vice President. Note: The Council VP is my partner, but the information and observations on Phase 1 are normally my own. ↩︎

Phase 1 Membrane Project, Day 4 (September 2, 2025)

Phase 1 Membrane Replacement Project

Project Mobilization Date: August 11, 2025
Work Start Date: August 28, 2025
Expected duration: 2–3 months
Primary contractor: Prostar https://prostar.ca/

Weather: Sunny, 26°C

It was back to school for kids today, and back to work for the membrane project!

Today, the work primarily consisted of removing the gravel/river rock from areas around the back of the 244 building, as well as the wooden beams that were holding the gravel in.

I also observed that four of the eight spaces that had been reserved for Prostar in the central part of the visitor parking had been opened up. I assume this was done by Prostar. Prostar also put cones down in the four stalls adjacent to their work area, by the 244 building, which makes sense, as it is where equipment like the excavator and dump truck have been operating. One of the parking stalls is the accessible one for the 248 building. I do not know if a temporary accessible stall will be made available elsewhere while this one is out of service.

Phase 1 Membrane Project, Day 2 (August 29, 2025)

Phase 1 Membrane Replacement Project

Project Mobilization Date: August 11, 2025
Work Start Date: August 28, 2025
Expected duration: 2–3 months
Primary contractor: Prostar https://prostar.ca/

Weather: Sunny, 29°C

NOTE: The stairway to the hospital path is closed as of today, and is likely to not re-open until the project is complete.

Work today:

  • The back area of the 244 building has been hosed down and further cleared.
  • A small excavator was brought in to begin removing the dirt from behind the 244 building and the stretch of lawn between the 244 and 248 buildings. It was onsite until around 4 p.m.
  • The dirt was loaded into a dump truck and removed from the complex.
  • Some of the stone work around the stretch of lawn between 244 and 248 has been dismantled and is being stored in the central courtyard.

A few more previously buried drains behind and beside the 244 building have been exposed.

NOTE: I am resetting the day count, as work officially begins today.

The work permit has been obtained and is now posted on the C-can. Work has finally resumed 17 days after mobilization.

Today. 3–6 workers (I was unable to get a precise number) spent the day removing the soil from behind the 244 building, exposing the membrane that will ultimately be removed and replaced.

You may see a great deal of water in some of the shots below. The Copperstone strata property manager ordered the irrigation system to this area cut off last year, so this water is seeping in from the irrigation system installed for the gardens that are part of the new Royal Columbian Hospital Acute Care Tower next door. Strata Council is working with Ellis Don and others to resolve this issue.

Meanwhile, removal of soil behind the 244 building and between buildings 244 and 248 will continue this week.

The membrane replacement project is currently slated to be complete in November.
